The city’s Waste Diversion Plan which includes recycling efforts like the blue box program has received city’s council’s endorsement.

North Bay City Councillor Mac Bain says he encourages people to recycle and to do it properly and ensure the items they put in the blue box aren’t contaminated like milk cartons for example.

“And when it gets to the recycling plant to be recycled into other product and if the container is open and it smells like rotten milk it could impact the whole shipment and everything will be land filled,” Bain says.

He says pasta jars are another example.

Bain gives staff good marks in terms of keeping environmentally sensitive items out of the landfill.

“If a paint can that’s full of paint or oil or a battery gets into the landfill this can cause a leachate problem into the nearby creek and that has to be treated,” he says.
