North Bay Police Chief Scott Tod is calling on city residents to report bike thefts.

He believes they’re up, but they don’t have numbers to support that because victims aren’t reporting their bikes have been stolen.

“We would like them to be reported to us because it would assist us when we recover bicycles so we get the bike back to the owner but also to complete a criminal investigation on the theft,” Tod tells BayToday.

He says they are working with businesses that sell bikes on getting important information like the serial numbers, for example, that can help track down the bike that’s been stolen or if a part has been used in an illegal bike chop shop.

As well, Tod says they’re working with owners of salvage yards to track down information.
