There are now five candidates to choose from in Nipissing-Temiskaming for the federal election next month.

Alex Gomm joined the race last night as he was nominated by The Green Party Canada.

Gomm, born and raised in North Bay, says this is a major election on the climate change issue and the stakes are enormous.

“All reliable science indicates that we are at the turning point. And if we as a species do not care about our survival we have a very short time frame to change,” he says.

In recent years, Gomm has taught overseas and volunteered on environmental projects.

Locally, he says getting more affordable housing for North Bay is key.

“This past summer has been the worst in North Bay’s history. We have an addiction crisis and the social and economic costs are staggering. The models that we have in place for addiction treatment aren’t working,” he says.

Gomm says the Green Party supports changing the system from first past the post to proportional representation.

He says it forces parties to work together for the common good.

Gomm says the party is also proposing a guaranteed income plan for employees industries impacted by advanced technology.
