The North Bay Fire Department is in the midst of Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting training at the airport.

It wraps up Friday night.

Fire Chief Jason Whiteley says one on the benefits thanks to council support is they’re doing it locally and that means firefighters are not going out of town but doing the training here and using the equipment that’s here.

“We have two specifically built crash trucks to protect the airport. It’s using that equipment. There’s also a cost savings benefit,” he says.

Whiteley says classroom and scenario training includes a crash, fire knockdown, engine fires, landing gear fires, cockpit fires and passenger rescue.

He told BayToday more firefighters can get trained instead of sending six or seven to Rochester, New York in the past.

As well, the department is advising about a scam going on in the community.

Whiteley says somebody is going to door saying they represent the fire department and they need to inspect smoke alarms and thermostats.

He says whoever it is they’re not from the fire department.

He told BayToday their staff would make an appointment with the homeowner and there’s another giveaway.

” If for whatever reason one of our inspectors or one of our crews shows up we would be in full uniform. You should ask for identification and if you’re still not sure call the fire department,” Whiteley says.
