A major fundraising event for breast cancer research takes place on Sunday at the North Bay Waterfront.

The CIBC Run For The Cure has a goal of $50,000 this year.

Co-chair Melanie Gainforth says this is the 15th annual North Bay event and the community has always been behind it.

“I’m really proud of North Bay for having raised almost $1.2 million here by ourselves. It’s really impressive how the community has come together to support the women in our lives,” she says.

She says in the 1980’s learning you had breast cancer was a death sentence and that’s not true any more.

Gainforth says there are many inspiring stories and they will be shared on Sunday.

One such story is that of Christine Comeau.

Comeau says her doctor told her five years ago that she would only live another two and a half years.

“It’s an ongoing thing to talk to people about my story whether it’s friends, family or someone else. I want to help people and it feels great to do that,” she says.

Registration on Sunday is at 9 am, the opening ceremonies are at 10 am and the start of the event is at 11 am.
