Northeast Region OPP are taking part in Operation Impact this long weekend, raising awareness and enforcing traffic laws in an effort to save lives on Ontario roads.

Provincial Police say there have been 216 fatal motor vehicle collisions this year, claiming 239 lives on OPP-patrolled roadways.

Forty-six deaths are attributed to speed, followed by lack of seat belt use at 44.

Driver inattention has been linked to 42 deaths and 33 people died in crashes that involved alcohol and/or drugs.

Police also say the total number of crashes, over 53,000, is up from last year.

They’re watching for speed, impaired and distracted driving along with seat belt usage this weekend.
