Information sessions on Canada Summer Jobs program

Local employers and not-for-profit groups can learn more about the Canada Summer Jobs program this week.

MP Anthony Rota is holding an information session in North Bay on Tuesday and another one in Temiskaming Shores on Wednesday.

“Since 2016, employers in Nipissing-Timiskaming have shared in $3.4 million and hired more than 1,000 young people through Canada Summer Jobs,” says Rota. “I encourage small business owners, not-for-profit organizations and public-sector employers to come out and learn more about the program and how they can offer valuable summer job opportunities to youth in our communities.”

The program provides wage subsidies for eligible employers who hire youth ages 15 to 30 for seasonal jobs during the summer.

Changes introduced last year make it even easier for employers to provide summer jobs and for youth to access those jobs.
– Eligibility expanded to all youth aged15-30 – not just students – who are legally entitled to work in Canada.
– Criteria clearly set out what is and isn’t eligible for funding.
– All positions will be posted on jobbank.gc.ca to get the word out and help match young people with employers.

Officials say not-for-profit employers can receive subsidies for 100 per cent of the provincial minimum wage, as well as employment-related costs.

Public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees can receive wage subsidies of 50 per cent of the hourly rate.

Applications for Canada Summer Jobs are being accepted until Feb. 24.
