A listener described it as a ‘massive fire’ in Mattawa this morning.

North Bay OPP say at approximately 4:30 a.m., officers from the North Bay Detachment were called to a fire at a multi-family structure on Mattawan Street.

Police say one person sustained life-threatening injuries in the fire.

Mattawa Mayor Dean Backer tells BayToday the row housing is one of the town’s social housing complexes.

“The fire department did a fantastic job to contain it to one unit,” he says. “However, there are other apartments, families that are going to be displaced because of the fire itself.”

Backer says the fire could’ve easily spread to more units had it not been for the town’s fire department.

“And it’s in close proximity to the hospital, and it’s a bush area, so our fire department were on it and did a bang up job,” he tells BayToday.

Mattawan Street is closed to traffic at this time until Mattawa Fire crews crews are finished.

The investigation remains ongoing and the Office of Fire Marshal will be attending the scene to assist.
