Nipissing University officials say they’re committed to allow sporting events to take place in the 2020-2021 season if it’s safe.

This as the university has announced a plan to deliver classes online this fall.

Dr. Casey Phillips, Assistant Vice-President, Students told BayToday the health and safety of the Nipissing community is of the utmost importance and will guide the decision-making every step of the way.

He says they’re encouraging the student-athletes to plan to return to campus this fall to fully engage in all aspects of a safe Nipissing University athletics sport program.

Dr. Phillips says Nipissing University Athletics is in regular communication with the provincial government, public health authorities, Ontario University Athletics and community partners.

He says additional campus guidelines and information regarding our plans to implement a training and competitive season will be shared as more information becomes available.

There is a moratorium on all in-person recruiting for sports until May 31st but recruitment by other means is permitted.

The North Bay & District Trappers AAA Hockey Association says they’re waiting on direction on when and how minor hockey will return but it is their intention to operate all teams for the 2020/21 season.

The decision is in the hands of Hockey Canada and in Ontario, the OHF and the NOHA in Northern Ontario.

A further update is expected on June 9th.
