The province is directing Stewardship Ontario to develop a transition plan in consultation with municipalities and
key stakeholders to take full control and funding responsibility of recycling between 2023-2025.

This week at city council, a decision was made to go from the Blue Box program to Extended Producer Responsibility on January 1st, 2023.

Councilllor Mac Bain says there’s no commitment at this point.

“AMO decided to ask the member municipalities that have recycling programs so the stewards can start to prepare,” he says.

Bain says the city does have a long term waste and recycling collection agreement with Miller Waste but there’s no obligation for the stewards to accept that contract when this changes but the city is hoping they will.

Bain says there will be savings if this comes to pass.

“It’s not an expense the city would have any longer. That $500,000 is not a recurring expense,” Bain says.
