Fire department says garbage fire was 'clearly an arson'

City fire crews snuffed out a garbage fire just after midnight this morning on the 300 block of Main East, but say the situation was ‘perilously close to turning into a very significant fire event’.

Officials say the garbage can was pushed against the doorway of a building.

They say the fire already extending into the doorframe and soffit above the door.

Police were called to investigate what the fire department says was ‘clearly an arson fire’.
