Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli says the province is welcoming the U-S decision to shelve a 10 per cent import tax on Canadian-made aluminum.

The move came hours before the federal government was going to announce a suite of countermeasures against American aluminum products and manufactured goods.

“Ontario welcomes the decision by the U.S. to lift tariffs on imports of aluminum products from Canada,” says Fedeli, Ontario’s Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade Minister. “This is a positive step forward in our joint economic recovery and beneficial for businesses and consumers on both sides of the border. We will always stand shoulder-to-shoulder with federal, provincial, and industry partners against U.S. protectionism and anything that hinders our shared prosperity.”

The U-S Trade Representative’s office says the tariffs are being lifted retroactive to the start of September because Canadian exports are expected to normalize over the remainder of the year.

The federal government says Canada retains its right to impose countermeasures if the U-S decides to reimpose its tariffs on aluminum products.
