North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit statistics indicate there are two active cases of COVID-19 in their coverage area now.

That’s an increase of one bringing the overall total caseload to 40 since the pandemic began.

The new case, involving a man between the ages of 40-59, is in the Parry Sound District and is self isolating.

Close contact to another case was how the virus was acquired.

The other active case was reported last week in Nipissing District.

Meantime, the Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Jim Chirico is reminding residents of the reduction by the province in gatherings.

Dr. Jim Chirico says social gatherings and organized public events have been limited to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.

However, the new limits will not apply to events or gatherings held in staffed businesses and facilities where protocols and guidelines are in place, such as bars, restaurants, cinemas, convention centres, banquet halls, gyms, places of worship, recreational sporting or performing art events.

The province has also announced new enforcement rules, which authorize a law enforcement officer to temporarily close any premises where the officer has reasonable grounds to believe that the event or gathering is in violation of the limits.

Dr. Chirico says with school and work resuming for many it remains very important to practice physical distancing, wear a face covering when distancing is a challenge and in all public indoor places including public transit.

Also wash or sanitize hands often and cough or sneeze into your sleeve.

He says students are reminded not to gather in large groups before and after school or at lunch.
