The Powassan Voodoos have signed forward, and North Bay Battalion draft pick, Ryan Mills.

He scored 19 goals last season with the North Bay AAA Trappers, collecting 46 points in 32 games.

Mills, who’s from Callander was a 10th round pick of the Battalion in the 2018 OHL Priority Selection.

“I think my playmaking skills are the top aspect of my game so just hope to put up some points and have a great season with them,” he says.

Max Gavin, the Voodoos new head coach, likes the potential he sees in Mills.

“I think he has got a good ceiling to him, I think sometimes the undersized guys get overlooked especially coming into junior hockey but I think with his vision, his smarts and the IQ that he has, I think he will find a good home here,” said Gavin.

The Voodoos also made their first trade of the off-season by sending forward Brett Hahkala to the Fort Frances Lakers of the Superior International Junior ‘A’ Hockey League.

Fort Frances is Hahkala’s hometown.

In return, the Voodoos receive a development fee.

The Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team has a new recruit.

Forward Matt Paul (pictured below) has committed to the team for next season.

He scored 38 points in 49 games last season and 11 points in the 12 playoff games.

Paul comes to the Lakers from the South Shore Lumberjacks of the Maritime Junior Hockey League, where he was the team captain.

“It’s very exciting for my family and me. I’ve been looking forward to continuing my education full-time and being able to do so while playing for the Lakers hockey program is very exciting,” Paul said. “I chose Nipissing because I heard lots of good things about it and felt it was the best fit for me.”

Lakers Head Coach Mike McParland is confident in Paul’s ability and that he’ll contribute to the team in his freshman season.

“He was one of the top defensemen in the Maritimes this year. We are looking forward to this offensive orientated defensemen joining the Lakers and going to school at Nipissing,” he says.

Former Lakers forward Brogan Bailey, who is assistant coach with the Lumberjacks, was part of the recruiting process.
