Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit says two civilians were killed in a mass shooting Sunday night in the downtown Toronto neighbourhood known as Greektown.

Police say a gunman opened fire with a pistol around 10 pm along Danforth Avenue.

The SIU says several people were wounded.

They also say after an exchange of gunfire with police, the shooter fled and was found deceased.

Toronto Police Chief Mark Saunders says it’s too early to speculate on a motive, but he is not referring to the incident as a random shooting.

“I’m looking at absolutely every single possible motive for this, when you have this many people that are struck by gunfire it’s a grave concern, I certainly want to find out exactly what it is and so I’m not closing any doors or chapters on this,” he says.

Witnesses have posted many photos and videos, including a clip that appears to show a man, clad in black with a bag at his side, walk a few steps before lifting his arms in front of him as gunshots ring out.
