The Friends of La Vase Portages and a few dignitaries took part in the 13th Annual Canoe Day on the weekend.

The event Saturday gave the 15 people involved firsthand experience of the route that was used to establish the fur trade, as well as the early main economy of our community.

“So many of our neighbours are shocked to hear that we have such rich historical landmarks within the city. It’s one thing to see the pictures we post online, but doesn’t come close to feeling the wind and sun on your face and pushing a paddle through the water as they had hundreds of years ago.” Says Chair of FOLVP Darren Patey.

Officials say they had to deal with some lower than average water levels, with a fair amount of portaging involved.
