An international traffic safety initiative has come to North Bay.

It’s called Vision Zero and its focus is to reduce serious injuries and eliminating fatalities for all road users.

North Bay Police Staff Sergeant Rick Dubeau is on the local committee.

He says Vision Zero promotes the 5 e’s of traffic safety.

“Engineering which is doing the road designs and operation, education which is raising awareness and enforcement which can be used as a deterrent,” he says.

The other 2 are evaluation which is the data piece and engagement which is all about community involvement.

City Council has endorsed their request for the committee to serve in an advisory capacity to provide recommendations to the Engineering Department that fit within the Vision Zero program.

Dubeau is a local committee member.

He details an example of how they would be involved on a traffic project.

“You know a project is going ahead. We can get involved and make sure the project is in line with Vision Zero so things are as safe as possible,” Dubeau says.
