Mayoral candidate Gary Gardiner is promoting responsible growth and infrastructure renewal.

That’s his latest campaign plank, saying North Bay needs to maximize its investment in existing infrastructure as a preferred method to grow the city.
He says infrastructure renewal needs to take precedence over needless expansion.
Gardiner also takes aim at proposals to expand Marshall Avenue to Highway 11.
Pointing to ongoing maintenance and operational costs like street lighting, patrolling and snow removal he wonders if the money should go toward repairing existing streets in West Ferris instead.
“The interchange alone would cost in the neighborhood of $25M, and then there is the cost of the railway flyover that would cost in the range of $10M to $15M. So let’s take a reality check. The total price for the interchange, the bridge over the rail line and roadway connection could easily exceed $50M,” he says in a release.

The issue of serving as a North Bay City Councillor and working at a local board came up at a candidates event on Wednesday.

Scott Robertson, Jeff Serran and Tanya Vrebosch say they will continue to work at their jobs if they’re voted into office on October 22nd.

A resident brought the issue up at the Near North Landlords Association event.

Serran, executive director of the Downtown Improvement Area says he doesn’t work for the city and is within his rights after checking with legal counsel.

Robertson is an employee of the North Bay Public Library and says he has contacted the city clerk and she indicated he wouldn’t have to take an unpaid leave of absence as he’s willing to do if it was necessary.

Vrebosch who works for the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board says she declares all her conflicts and if she was in the wrong it would have been clearer 11 years ago that something was wrong here.
