An update on a story we first told you about in May. It regards the use of smart phone technology for North Bay Police. Chief Shawn Devine says the plan is for all officers to receive phones next year as part of their ‘mobile solution”. He says when they come into work they’ll be able to use a docking station and get all the latest information as they head out on the road.

“They would then take that hand held device and take it out to the car. They will take it in to crime scenes, take photographs, do interviews with it and there’s even a system with voice to text,” he says.

He says officers could do their jobs much faster.

“I’m not saying officers can’t have access to information but they have to look for it. The information with this system will be fed to officers live as it happens,” he says.

He pegs the cost of all this as being in the tens of thousands of dollars but wouldn’t give an exact figure. Devine says the plan would have to be approved by city council.
