The mayor of Montreal is wading into the French language services debate in Ontario, and mentions North Bay at the same time.

Valérie Plante tweets that when she studied in North Bay several years ago, she discovered a strong and vibrant Franco-Ontarian community.

She goes on to say services in French are essential to ensure respect and dignity for all citizens of Ontario.

The province has scrapped plans for a French Language University and is looking to consolidate the French Language Services Commissioner.

According to an October 2017 article in Le Journal de Montreal, Plante is originally from Rouyn-Noranda and spent a year in North Bay as a teenager learning English.
