The city’s municipal heritage committee has picked atleast 1 location for a heritage plaque this year.

Chair Peter Handley says it will recognize the importance of the Golf Street Crossing.

“It’s right beside Lee Park. The plaque will recognize George W.Lee and Amelia Park so we’ll have a plaque down there. That’s the one definite project that we’re doing,” he says.

He says there promises to be others but there’s a new committee and they’re just beginning their work.

Other projects include promoting heritage contests including one where the winner will be recognized at the Heritage Fair in the spring at Nipissing University.

As well, 3 years ago there was a campaign to have rotating displays of historical items in the lobby at North Bay City Hall.

Nothing’s happened and so Handley gave council a gentle nudge this week.
He says one of the displays mentioned was artifacts from the Algonquin Regiment.

“The proponents are afraid of losing these Algonquin Regiment artifacts and this is a way to keep them in town. The Algonquin Regiment is one of the key components of North Bay’s history,” he says.

Handley says if something isn’t done the display could be moved outside the city and put on display.
