The city is clarifying the intent behind two recent motions involving Endangered Species and Provincially Significant Wetlands, and development.
Director of Community Development and Growth Ian Kilgour was at the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority’s AGM Wednesday night.
With Species at Risk, he tells BayToday it’s about streamlining two pieces of legislation that are protecting the same thing.
“The idea is to still protect endangered species, there was never any intent to bypass the Endangered Species Act, but was for it to work better with our planning act approvals in the City of North Bay,” he says.
As for wetlands, Kilgour says studies would still need to be done and the Conservation Authority and province need to be convinced about protections.
“In Temagami they can use these rules, so that was the intent on moving the line down to say ‘we would like the same flexibility as New Liskeard and Temagami,” he says.
Two consultation sessions are coming up next week.
There’s one during the day (10-5) on February 12th with stakeholders and a night time session the next night (Feb. 13) at the West Ferris Community Centre, starting at 7 pm.

Meantime, North Bay City Councillor Chris Mayne is the chair of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority.

He was elected to the post last night at the annual general meeting.

Powassan councillor Dave Britton was elected vice chair.
