North Bay City Council is going to receive a report from staff on a possible textile ban at the Merrick Landfill.

This after a motion was approved last week by council calling for the report.

It was authored by Councillor Mac Bain.

He says the cost to the taxpayer of using the landfill is close to $43 per household and it’s hoped without textiles that cost could be lowered in future contracts.

“If we can institute a ban and if we could see a reduction in weight and mass going to the landfill we might be abe to collect more at the curb. That could mean a reduced price,” he says.

Bain says this doesn’t mean textiles could be put in the blue box for recycling but there are options on where to send your textiles. These items include shirts, running shoes and coats.

He says the city could help by placing receptacles throughout the community.

“Putting them on municipal property, at arenas or at city hall so there are more options for people in dropping off textiles,” Bain says.

Bain says textiles can be re-used in many ways and there are companies that will accept them.

He says the landfill is 24 years old and has a 19 year shelf life left.
