It’s been a few days tough days in Mattawa with all the water and that’s expected to continue today.

Mattawa Mayor Dean Backer told BayToday excess water will be coming today from the Otto Holden Dam, the Timiskaming dam in Quebec along with the continued melt from snow still from the bush and that means an extra 50 cm according to the OPG, the Conservation Authority and the MNRF.

Backer says that’s after learning late Monday about the flood issues that were about to hit.

“We need a better communication plan as to what’s going on. For two weeks now, we’ve been told we’ve peaked and nothing is going to happen. And then at the 11th hour on Monday, bang all Hell broke loose,” he says.

He says his big priority is keeping residents safe.

Mattawan Street from Main to Sid Turcotte Park Road and Timmins Street remain closed and Brook Street from the highway to Ottawa Street is also closed.

Anyone in need of a sandbag is asked to call 705-744-5611.

The public is asked to stay away flood impacted areas so work can be done.

A sand bag return location will be prepared and advised of once the emergency situation has stabilized.

Town officials will be working with the Province of Ontario on Disaster Recovery Assistance for residents of the municipality.

If activated by the province, the Disaster Recovery Program could help cover emergency expenses and costs to repair or replace essential property for individuals (primary residence), small owner-operated businesses and not-for-profit organizations.

Residents are encouraged to contact their insurance provider to determine level of coverage.

For Emergency Services call: 911

The flood warning is in effect until Monday.
