Grade seven students at ESC Algonquin have been busy the last few months learning about the negative impacts of smoking.

They’ve done research and conducted interviews and have reached several conclusions.

They include smoking affecting every inch of your body, second-hand smoke causing the same effects as smoking does and an increased risk of getting lung disease and cancer.

Zoe Caswell say they were inspired to do this project because they’ve seen the impact of smoking in their own families.

“Quite a few of my family members smoke and it’s hard to watch. It really hurts to see because if you smoke you have more of a chance to get cancer or lung disease,” she says.

Ajay Hacquard says they learned a lot.

“What it can do to your brain, your bones and your skin. I also found out how many cigarettes there are in every package,” he says.

They also did a survey and more than half of the respondents said that their parents influenced them to smoke.

Some of the students did research and interviews while others have been handing out flyers letting people know their concerns.

The students say their solution was to do more than just put up posters so they reached out to get on the radio and spread the message to a wider audience.
