Local teachers facing job losses and others rallied at the Near North District School Board office late yesterday afternoon.

Over 30 secondary teachers are still without a job, although the board said last week they’re still awaiting information from the province.

Union officials say promises of no jobs being lost have not been kept.

They say the result is students are suffering, while many teachers are being forced out of their communities, with some facing two-hour commutes for a new job.

Official say the rally comes on the heals of a recent report released by the Conference Board of Canada that calculated the Ford government cuts to education will cost Ontario taxpayers $1.30 for every $1.00 saved.

MPP Vic Fedeli issued a statement about the rally.

“As reported by local media last week, senior staff at the Near North District School Board confirmed what our government and I personally have been saying for months – that there will be no job losses as a result of changes to class sizes or e-learning. It’s time the politically motivated fear-mongering come to an end,” he says.
