The chair of the Let’s Remember Adam Stop For the School Bus committee is calling on the provincial government to pass legislation making An Amber Eight Lamp system mandatory on school buses in Ontario.

Pierre Ranger presented a petition of over 1,000 signatures to Nipissing MPP Vic Fedeli on Friday.

Ranger says the idea is to have two amber lights and two red lights on both the front and back of the school bus. He says doing so would be an improvement from the current situation.

“The amber lights would come on when the bus is about to stop and this would warn drivers the bus is about to stop. It will make the bus safer and more understandable for drivers. Every other province has this system except for Ontario,” he says.

Ranger says this is safer for everyone.

Once there’s ambers it is going to be a lot simpler. It means amber means I have to slow down and if it is safe to pass I can pass. This is same as the traffic light at an intersection. Amber means caution and red means stop,” he says.

Ranger is also calling for more cameras on school buses.

Pierre’s brother Adam died after being struck by a vehicle while getting off a school bus in Mattawa nearly 20 years ago.

Adam Ranger was five years old.
