The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team has advanced to the second round of the playoffs.

They defeated Queen’s 3-2 in overtime in game two of their best-of-three series Friday night at Memorial Gardens.

Maggie McKee scored the overtime winner on a powerplay for the Lakers.

Nipissing’s Brianna Gaffney opened the scoring in the first, before Queen’s took the lead with two goals in the first ten minutes of the third period.

The Lakers’ Katelyn Heppner would tie the game up and force overtime with 1:19 left in the third.

If Toronto beats Guelph in game two of their series this afternoon (Saturday), Nipissing will take on York in the second round.

The Lions dispatched Waterloo in two straight games.

During the regular season, the Lakers lost 6-3 on the road to York, but beat the Lions 4-3 at home.
