Pederson Construction has won a $1.74 million contract from the city to build a new cell at the Merrick Landfill.

Chair of Infrastructure and Operations Councillor Chris Mayne says the landfill has space for ten cells and this would be the 8th one.

“Once it is built, dug out and lined with clay and ready for use it will have a five year life span and that’ll look after us well for the next few years,” Mayne says.

Councillor Mike Anthony points the landfill has surpassed original expectations back in 1994.

“It had a 20 year life span originally . It was to be finished with all 10 cells filled by 2014 and we’re already six years past that,” he says.

The current cell was opened in 2015.
