City Council unanimously endorsed a motion to lend the bid committee for the 2018 World Women’s Curling Championship $129,000.

The bid by the city and the North Bay Granite Curling Club is currently before Curling Canada and organizers expect to find out next month if they’re successful.

Government agencies will not consider funding requests until they have the bid secured.

That’s where the city comes in, if the bid committee can’t get funding from other third party sources.

Councillor Mark King says this is a good investment for the city as this event will be huge for North Bay.

Should the committee not get provincial funding they will forfeit their share of gross ticket sales to the city.

Rick Miller is a member of the bid committee.

He says originally they had to come up with $300,000 and they had $171,000, plus the ticket packages that were sold and so they were well above $300,000.

However, he says Curling Canada later said that pre-sold tickets couldn’t be part of the $300,000.

Miller says they expect to find out next month if their bid is successful.
