North Bay Police are currently investigating reports of a mother bear and two cubs that have been spotted near Widdifield Secondary School on Ski Club Road and Airport Road area.

Police say the public should keep in mind that bears usually avoid humans but are attracted to food in urban and rural areas.

So garbage cans, bird feeders and barbecues are vulnerable to be toppled, ransacked or raided.

Police say if you encounter a bear don’t panic, don’t corner the bear so there is a clear escape route, slowly back away and leave the area and if you’re not alone stay with the others in your group.

Dont’s include don’t scream, don’t run, don’t make direct eye contact and don’t climb a tree.

Police say if you’re close to a bear: yell, wave your arms to make yourself look bigger, throw objects and blow a whistle.

If that doesn’t work use bear pepper spray and fight back.
