There’s a new base commander at 22 Wing CFB North Bay.

Colonel Sean Boyle relinquished command of CFB North Bay/Canadian Air Defence Sector to Colonel Henrik Smith during a change of command ceremony on Wednesday at the 22 Wing Fitness and Wellness Centre Gymnasium.

Presiding over the ceremony was Major-General David Wheeler, Commander, 1 Canadian Air Division/Canadian NORAD Region.

Colonel Boyle is leaving to take a leadership role for the Canadian Forces in the Middle East.

It was announced last week that he is becoming the commander of Air Task Force Iraq, which is Canada’s contribution to the stabilization force.  Colonel Boyle‘s tour is for 6 months and he will be based in Kuwait.

He says getting involved in the community has been one of the best parts of his job.

Colonel Boyle says he’s leaving with mixed emotions as he knows the wing here is the envy of wings across the country.  He says the base, under his watch, has made a difference in the community.

He says military members have been involved in several events including the United Way campaign, Heart and Stroke fundraising, Relay For Life, holding a Christmas concert and, of course, Armed Forces Day.
