This week is YMCA Peace Week and to kick it off the North Bay YMCA honored the recipients of the 2016 Peace Medals.

The three people included adult winners Jim Marmino (below)and Nikki Anderson (above) and youth winner Sophie Bywater.(also below)

10 year old Sophie says she had the option of choosing a cause that needed our help.

She chose the North Bay and District Humane Society and she raised funds by selling cookies and lemonade.

From there she helped a family get the funding so they could afford a service dog for their daughter who was born with Autism and Down Syndrome.

She says she wants to make the world a better place for children her age so they can read, drink clean water and grow up normally as we do here.

Anderson was nominated for her work in raising awareness about animal abuse and Marmino for his fundraising activities.

He says he started doing this because his dad did.

He says his dad was raising funds for the Davedi Club and he’s continued that work throughout the city.

Peace Week continues with a Yoga for Peace event tomorrow at 6, a Walk for Peace on Friday at 10 am and personal hygiene products are being collected all week at the North Bay Y.
