Large industrial businesses in northern Ontario will be able to rely on a rebate program every year. The province announced the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program will become a permanent part of the budget, beginning with the 2016 fiscal year.

President of the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Al Spacek says its great news for the region to hear the program is becoming permanent.

It allows individual companies to save up to $20-million per year on hydro costs.

President of the local Chamber of Commerce Jake Lacourse says this will help up to 16 companies in the region offset some of their biggest costs.

Lacourse says the one fallback is there are no local companies that fall under this category of large industrial electricity consumers. He says the Chamber hopes the program can be expanded to add in medium and small sized companies.
