NipissingThe overall population in Northern Ontario is shrinking, but there are a handful of sectors that are seeing growth, including Nipissing.

The stats are included in a report by the Northern Policy Institute, looking at population growth between 2001 and 2013.

President and CEO Charles Cirtwell says it’s good news for Nipissing, considering the entire north shrunk by 2 percent.

He points out Nipissing’s population increased by about a thousand people in those 12 years, or 1.2 percent.

Reasons for growth include diversifying the economy, investing in infrastructure and being geographically closer to major urban centres like Toronto and Ottawa.

He says Nipissing seems to fit into all of those categories.
