History was made at the RJ Surtees Athletic Centre last night (Wednesday) as the Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball team won their first ever playoff game 77-74 over Queen’s.

The Lakers were up by 20 heading into the final quarter, before the Gaels stormed back.

A layup with 29 seconds to go pulled Queens to within three points, then a Gaels shot at the buzzer stayed out, giving the Lakers the win.

Justin Shaver led the Lakers with 17 points followed by Jaaden Lewis with 15.

Nipissing advances to the quarterfinals against Ryerson in Toronto on Saturday.

The Nipissing Lakers women’s hockey team is looking forward to a Sudbury Saturday night.

They’re heading to the Nickel City up 1-0 in their best of three OUA playoff series against Laurentian.

This after a 5-2 win last night at Memorial Gardens.

After the Lakers built up a 3-nothing lead, the Voyageurs pulled their goalie and scored two quick goals with about 9 minutes left in the third.

Nipissing would add a couple empty-net goals to secure the win.

Game two goes Saturday night at the Countryside Arena.

And back to hockey, 13 Powassan Voodoos grabbed at least a point in a lopsided 9-0 win over French River last night.

Three players scored two goals each, including Parker Bowman, Dylan D’Agostino and Tyler Gervais-Rolfe.

The Voodoos are back in action tomorrow at home to Timmins.
