Syrian RefugeesIt was a chilly -15 outside at the Jack Garland Airport as the first family of Syrian refugees arrived in North Bay Friday afternoon.

But the family was warmed by the welcome it received from about 30 well-wishers that met the family as they got off the plane.

Local pharmacist, Mohamed Yasser acted as the translator for the father Ibrahim Jabr and he said the biggest challenge for the family will be the adjustment to a new city and school.

The husband, his wife and four sons were met after travelling from Jordan to Toronto.

Mohamed Yasser translated again, saying the family was overwhelmed by the reception.

The family will also need some winter clothing. Only the 10 year old son was prepared for the cold, wearing a new parka.

They spent about 20 minutes meeting people in the airport before being whisked off to their new home.

A second Syrian family is expected to arrive in the city next month.
