All four local school boards are eligible to receiving funding under a new provincial initiative called the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund.

Boards receive funding to replace, repair and install energy-efficient building elements.

That includes high-efficiency lighting, building automation systems, energy-efficient windows, and solar energy and geothermal systems.

The province says it’s being done to help improve student health and fight climate change.

The Near North Board is eligible to receive the bulk of the local funding, over $1.6-million dollars.

Next is the local French Catholic Board at $474,000 with $372,000 for the Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic Board.

Nearly $93,000 is earmarked for the local French Public Board.

As part of its Climate Change Action Plan, the province is allocating $200 million worth of cap and trade proceeds to launch the fund for schools across the province.
