The Nipissing Lakers men’s basketball team has signed two new players 19-year-old guard William Tran (pictured below) and 18-year-old forward David Quinn (pictured above).

Tran comes to Nipissing from Newmarket where he played for Vaughan Secondary School.

“I am a versatile guard that can defend, create for my teammates, and score from all three levels. I also bring a winning attitude and intangibles to the team,” Tran said. “I would describe my style as a playmaker that brings versatility on offense,” he says.

“Will comes from a very well coached and respected program (Vaughan Secondary). With the coaching he received from Coach Gus Gymnopoulous, Will has the foundations terms of his development and basketball IQ,” Lakers Coach Chris Cheng explained. “Will brings us good size, length, and shooting ability. Adding him is a key piece not only for this upcoming season, but the future.”

As a part of championship teams during his career, Tran is thrilled with the opportunity to bring that success to the Lakers.

Quinn is from the Ottawa area, having played for Louis Riel.

“I’m a hard working player, who likes to use my size and weight. It’s a work in progress, but I enjoy taking mid-range shots. I would consider my biggest strength is my rebounding and my spin move in the paint,” Quinn said of his play.

Cheng noted that Quinn’s size is noticeable right away, but what separates him from other big men is his knowledge of the game. He has a strong basketball IQ, which should help him adapt to the OUA game quickly.

“David gives us length, rim protection, and size. It’s not every day you can get a 6-foot-11 post that has good skill and understanding of the game. The past three years, David has played in many high competitive environments. All these environments exposed him to really good coaching, training, and competition,” Cheng explained.

Nipissing officials are excited about both recruits, saying they are hardworking, versatile student-athletes who will look to push the program to the next step.
