CFB North Bay has a new commander.

Col. Henrik Smith on Thursday relinquished command to Col. Mark Roberts who has served at the base before.

He says that was one reason he was interested in the post.

He says he has seen up close the leadership here and so when you get a chance to be commander it’s something special.

Col. Smith is moving on to a new job in Ottawa.

Col. Roberts says they will continue community outreach through involvement in programs like Coach4Food and Relay For Life.

He says the job is challenging and interesting as there are new technologies and threats to deal with on a regular basis.

Col. Roberts says the military’s job is to defend Canada against air threats and one of the challenges is the unpredictability of the world.

He says what they can do is be ready for the unexpected.

He says they have conventional and unconventional adversaries.
