North Bay Fire Chief Jason Whitley says on Friday afternoon the city was taking recycled metal to their contractor when a a radioactive source was detected and the material was sent back to the landfill.

Then the Nuclear Safety Board and the fire department were contacted because of the high levels of radiation.

He says their assessment was the radiation levels were much lower and the container was put away from the general public so can be disposed of in a safe manner.

He says there are companies that do that and one will be contacted.

He says the material will now be disposed of by a company that will determine how to package the material, how to transport it and where to dispose it.

Whiteley says the landfill is operating as normal.

He says ironically on Thursday, they sent their Gamma ray detector away for the annual check.

And then on Friday there was this incident and that’s when the hospital which has the same equipment came to the rescue to help out the fire department.
