An update on what city police call a rare random act of violence early yesterday morning (Wednesday).

It’s alleged a man entered the unit of a downtown residential building and assaulted a young child, then held a kitchen knife to a woman who intervened to protect her child.

She had already called 9-1-1.

Police say she told her children to run to a neighbour’s residence, which they did.

That’s when the man dragged the woman outside, with police officers seeing them both exit the building.

The man then fled on foot.

After a short police pursuit he was located on the 600 block of Cassells Street.

A 22 year old North Bay man faces 10 charges in all, including break and enter, assault with a weapon, forcible confinement and three counts of assault police.

Police say before this incident the man was unknown to the victims.
