NU lakersLakers Hockey last night had both teams facing different opponents.

While the women’s side faced off against the Ryerson Rams, the men were taking on the McGill Redmen.

Both Lakers teams fought well, but only one came out with a victory. The women’s team dominated the Rams, walking away with a 6-1 win, their ninth this season.

Sam Strassburger scored the opening goal halfway through the first period. Janica Vossos found the back of the net later in the first, followed swiftly by Kayla Carter.

So far, Nipissing has the shot advantage 10-8.

Kaitlyn McManus scored on an empty net in the second followed by Brooklyn Irwin which brought the score up to 5-0.

The Lakers would make 10 more shots on net in the period.

Moving to the third, Kayla Carter put another point on the board, followed by the lone goal from the Rams to wrap-up the game and break Lakers goalie Jackie Rochefort’s shutout.

At the end of the day, The Rams did make more shots on net in the third, but ultimately both teams made 23 shots on goal.

Next weekend sees the team travel to take on Laurier on Saturday and Waterloo on Sunday.

 

Meantime the Nipissing Lakers men’s hockey team was not as successful in their first game of 2015. The team fell early in the game and couldn’t recover, leading to a 5-1 loss to McGill.

McGill opened the scoring just after the 8 minute mark in the first period and then scored again not one minute later.

The Redmen continued to dominate scoring again three minutes into the second.

Dominic Talbot-Tassi scored the first three points on the night with assists by Mathieu Pompei and David Rose.

Nipissing would then make their only goal of the game as Colin Campbell was able to find the back of the net. He was assisted by Guillaume Naud and Dylan Staples.

Liam Heelis responded to that goal with one of his own making the score 4-1.

And just before the end of the second period, Tardif Richard gave the Redmen their 5-1 win.

Domenic Graham started on net for the Lakers, allowing five goals in the first two periods, while Kirk Rafuse was strong in the third, turning aside all 10 shots sent his way.

Overall, McGill outshot the Lakers 35-20.

Next up for the team is a couple of road games next weekend; they face Waterloo on Saturday and Laurier on Sunday.
