City Hall generic

Delegates to this weeks Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities Conference in Timmins are now back in their home communities feeling good about the conference.

So says city councillor Mac Bain who was in attendance.

He gives the government good grades for taking an interest in the concerns of municipal politicians.

Infact he says the premier has attended their conference three times now including this year.

He says many members of her cabinet and the other opposition leaders also took part.

Bain says infrastructure spending was a key issue at the conference as there is currently an infrastructure deficit in northern communities including North Bay and the federal and provincial government will be rolling out details on infrastructure spending soon.

Bain says the feds are promising to spend 50 per cent of projects which would leave the province to pony up  a third and the municipalities the rest which would be less than a third of the cost for each project.

Meantime, when the Ring of Fire comes in hot, Ontario Northland wants to be there to guide it.

ONTC C-E-O Corina Moore says they’re ready to handle the rail aspect of the mine development.

Despite its preparedness, ONTC says they have no control over whether the ring of fire will be a road or rail production.
