Most crime stats as of the end of July are lower in North Bay than a year ago.

That list includes sexual offenses, assaults, robberies, and total offenses.

Of note break and enters are up by 13 to 106.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Tod says the clearance rate is just 12 % and that’s not nearly good enough.

“I don’t know what the provincial average clearance rate is on break and enter. But certainly solving 12 % of break and enters is something we can improve on. And internally we’re looking at how we can do that,” he says.

Tod reiterates public education is an important factor too and letting people know ways they can prevent break and enters by securing their home and locking their vehicles.

Total calls are down year to year by close to 400.

One concern though is the number of calls police get related to mental health issues.

He says they have several community partnerships.

“The community hub model is one of the examples of how we work together to deal with acutely elevated individuals in our society that need to have a response that’s not traditional to any one organization but a collaboration of all of them together,” he says.

Tod says both sexual assaults and assaults are down to year but they are still seeing on average 2-3 domestic violence incidents a day.

Total charges this year as of the end of July are down by nearly 200.
