A couple thousand local students joined dignitaries in front of North Bay City Hall today (Monday) to celebrate Franco-Ontarian Day.

They raised the Franco-Ontarian Flag after venturing down Main, Fraser and McIntyre Streets wearing green and white.

During his speech Mayor Al McDonald commented that the crowds have grown at the flag raising event since he became mayor seven and a half years ago.

“There was 7 or 8 of us raising the flag and today we have over 2,000 here celebrating Franco-Ontarian Day in the City of North Bay. We proud of this and we’re proud of you, give yourselves a big round of applause,” he told the students.

September 25th is a day to celebrate the Franco-Ontarian community and it’s history.

The province says Ontario is home to Canada’s largest francophone community outside of Quebec.
