North Bay City Council is looking at developing a code of conduct policy.

Councillor Mac Bain says the idea is to prevent breaches of confidentiality by councillors and what can happen when a breach occurs.

He says sanctions could include an apology from the councillor, a financial penalty or the removal of a councillor from a committee.

Bain says the staff will be preparing a report and that should come back to the main council for discussion and debate within a month.

He says the community overall and the business community specifically must know council will respect confidentiality.

Bain says this step is being recommended by the Ontario Ombudsman’s office and another idea is for the city to have an integrity commissioner.
