A call from North Bay City Council for the provincial government to regulate gas prices.

The motion was brought forward by Councillor Mike Anthony at last week’s meeting.

“Let’s seriously look at it. There’s five other provinces doing it. You avoid sticker shock. You don’t get the surprises. You hear, for example, gas is between $1.06 and $1.08 for the next two weeks. You wouldn’t see the crazy fluctuations we have,” he says.

Anthony says the five provinces that are regulating prices include P.E.I., Quebec, NovaScotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

Copies of the motion will be sent to Premier Kathleen Wynne, the Minister of Energy, the Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities and Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

Meantime, a bill to regulate gas prices has been shot down by the Liberal government.

MPP Gilles Bisson, who introduced the legislation to combat gas price gouging, says the Liberals had a choice and “it’s disappointing that they chose to let families down once again.”

Bisson adds he hasn’t given up on regulating gas prices, and that the NDP will continue to push and put forward solutions to the issue.
