garden

The North Bay Police Department and Fire Department are growing a row this summer.

The North Bay Heritage Gardners and the North Bay and Area Community Garden Coalition asked them to take part in the grow a row initiative with the focus on having an edible garden.

Erin Reyce is with the coalition.

She says having the garden at fire station 1 is a central location.

She says grow a row has a couple of benefits including improving food literacy and educating people on how food grows but there’s a new benefit too as the harvest can help out clients of the North Bay Food Bank, The Salvation Army and The Gathering Place. She says flowers are great to have in a garden but there’s no reason not to have edible items like shrubs, fruits and vegetables along side.

Reyce says the city and the health unit are already involved in the program.
