There was plenty of cheering in Almaguin Highlands, and right across the country, with Canada’s Olympic gold medal win in mixed doubles curling.

Kaitlyn Lawes and John Morris defeated the defending world champions from Switzerland 10-3 to win gold in South Korea.

Kaitlyn’s half brother Dave Lawes lives in South River.

He’s extremely proud of the game they played in Pyeongchang.

“It was a clinic, they came out to play right from the first rock from Kaitlyn, both of them were just amazing,” he says.

The retired OPP Officer says Kaitlyn has a passion for curling.

“She started at a very young age with our father, following him around to the curling club in Winnipeg. Like all of us, certainly fell in love with the game and has developed into an exceptionally good curler,” Lawes says.

Morris and Lawes claimed the second Olympic gold medals of their careers and Canada’s third of the Pyeongchang Games.

Lawes was third for the Jennifer Jones team that won women’s team gold in 2014, and Morris was vice for Kevin Martin when they took the men’s team title in 2010.

She will be coming to North Bay as part of Jones’ Team Canada rink for the 2018 Ford World Women’s Curling Championship.
